Feb 2016 - OEI Continues to Assist with Earthquake Recovery in Nepal

Basu Higher Secondary School, Bhaktapur, Nepal - 14 Feb 2016
OEI was honored to assist with earthquake recovery efforts at the Basu Higher Secondary School in Bhaktapur, Nepal. The city of Bhaktapur suffered extensive damage and loss of life during the April 25th 2015 earthquake. Through generous donations, OEI was able to provide new school uniforms and shoes for more than 50 students whose families were most affected by the earthquake. The school administration provided OEI with a wonderful letter of appreciation: "We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to ONE EARTH INSTITUTE for providing vital economic assistance to provide a set of school uniform each to the earthquake-victim and financially weak students from Grade I to VIII along with the wall painting aid in the ECD classrooms."

Langtang National Park Area, Nepal - Feb 2016
As we were heading to our field research site in the Himalayan region of Langtang National Park, Nepal we happened across a roadside camp for villagers who had be displaced by the April 25, 2015 earthquake. These people are from the local ethnic group Tamang and had lived in a village of 65 families in a very remote area of the mountains that had been devastated by the earthquake (and landslides). Their temporary camp is located on the downside of a small road heading up into the mountains; living conditions are extremely primitive. We made contact with a village elder - a woman who also serves as the general health care provider in the village - who helped distribute clothing so to ensure that all families received some donation. The villagers conveyed their sincere appreciation for the kindness and generosity.

Oct 2015 - OEI Assists with Earthquake Recovery Efforts in Nepal

Following the massive earthquake in Nepal on 25 April 2015, One Earth Institute received a number of generous donations to help with the recovery efforts. Working in collaboration with our partner organization in Nepal, the Nepal Biodiversity Research Society (NEBORS), we identified two elementary schools in the remote hills outside of the Kathmandu valley in desperate need of basic supplies and repairs. Monetary donations were made to the Shree Suryajyoti Lower Secondary School, Kushadevi-5, Kavrepalanchok and the Shree Phulchoki Lower Secondary School, Kushadevi-6, Nayagaon, Kavre. This assistance has helped to replace damaged teaching equipment and supplies, provide new school uniforms for the children, and fund the repair of basic school facilities. OEI and NEBORS hope to provide additional assistance for these and other remote schools in the following months.
